Before becoming using IntelliJ to its max, you will need to practice.

But more important, is to become good at touch typing.

You will need to type without looking at the keyboard.

You don't need to be fast. Focus on accuracy.

You do need to be able to hit these keys as well as letters, numbers:

  • control (ctrl)
  • shift
  • alt
  • enter
  • backspace
  • insert
  • delete
  • home
  • end
  • all the arrow keys
  • PgUp
  • PgDn
  • F keys
  • all the symbol keys like brackets, punctuation, symbols above the numbers

So do some course, especially on the awkward keys.

Such as:

Or make your own practice sessions.

Also try using the same keyboard layout you use at work, as well as for personal use. It makes practicing far easier.

I am going to be using shortcuts for unix/windows system, using gnome keymap. Use the search in Settings (ctrl+alt+s) and search for keymap. The Mac equivalent shortcut can easily found through a web search.
